October: Ten Days That Shook the World - Metric Montage
Переглядів 3,6 тис.7 років тому
Fragment from Sergei Eisenstein's October, a celebratory dramatization of the 1917 October revolutions. In this specific fragment Sergei demonstrates "metric montage" which is one of the five forms of montage in Eisenstein's theory of montage, als known as Russian montage.
Bridget Jones' Diary - That was the moment

Simple use of a freeze frame. Clearly shows Bridget's ability to interfere in the syuzhet/story. This denotes not only her position as narrator but also a temporal and narrative gap between VO-Bridget and shown Bridget.
The Young Victoria 2009 - King's Birthday

Jean-Marc Vallee directed a touching and elaborate portrait of the British Queen Victoria, from which this fragment is taken. Shown is a grand dinner at the then King's palace. I usually use this scene when explaining the technique and use of focus in film.

Film by Tarsem Singh. Exquisite use of depth of field.
Hansel and Gretel in Gilliam's The Brothers Grimm (2005)
Переглядів 25 тис.7 років тому
Short clip from the 2005 movie The Brothers Grimm by Terry Gilliam. The Grimms (who were actually important linguists) are reimagined as two crooks, scamming superstitious people by making believe they solve their supernatural problems. Quite a lucrative business until they are asked to look into something that might actually be magical. The people and occurences they come across appear as insp...
The Hunger - Tonal Montage
Переглядів 3,4 тис.7 років тому
Tony Scott, Ridley's brother, is responsible for this vampire cult classical from 1983. Shown is part of the opening sequence of the film, during which he employs something related to Eisenstein's tonal montage. The combination of images invoke an emotion as a whole, rather than in isolation.

Live-action movies need more villains like this. Pure evil for the sake of being pure evil. Classic.

That pose and the foot stomping making it obvious how tickled she was by wearing someone's dogs. If I'm a villain I want to be as iconic as that.

My top 3 favorite villain laughs: 1. Pat Carroll's Ursula. hands down she wins the gold. Rest in Peace, Pat. 2. Glenn Close's Cruella De Vil. She comes in at a very close second, she can't touch Ursula. 3. Margaret Hamilton's Wicked Witch of the West. WWoW is my all time FAVORITE villain, but her laugh comes in at a solid 3rd place on my list. Rest in Peace, Margaret.
